Mission
The Mission of Bayanihan Clinic is to provide culturally and linguistically sensitive primary care to the underserved Filipino population, particularly World War II Veterans and recent immigrants, and the greater uninsured population in Sacramento.

History

During WWII, President Franklin Roosevelt drafted 142,000 Filipinos to fight against the Japanese, and in return promised them full medical and retirement benefits.  But in 1946, Congress passed the Rescission Act, which withdrew those benefits promised to Filipino Veterans.  Since then, approximately 26,000 veterans have immigrated to the United States and are still waiting for our government to recognize their veteran status.  Roughly 300 veterans live in the Sacramento area in crowded and unsanitary conditions and are in need of health care.

In February of 2002, a group of four UC Davis undergraduates recognized the need of a free clinic catering to the Filipino community, specifically the Filipino WWII veterans.  Dr. Richard Ikeda, Executive Director of Health For All became the group's sponsor and suppored the development of this community-oriented primary care project.
